Avalanche Skills Training – Level 1
The focus of our AST1 Course (Avalanche Skills Training) is on preparing people to make informed decisions in avalanche terrain and understand the risks in which they are engaging. It is a great way to gain a foundation in avalanche awareness and safety. This national certified AST1 course in Jasper uses the curriculum and student handbooks provided by Avalanche Canada and is delivered by our professional ACMG accredited instructors. .
We offer remote learning, a video call prior to the field day and one day in the field. This is a great introduction to AST1 or a great refresher at the start of the season.
You will have access to our ACMG accredited instructors, while having time to learn at your own pace, in your own home, at times that work for you. Take a look at Module 1 from our Online Classroom to discover what it’s all about.
Totally new to Ski Touring? Our AST 1 Jasper field days are based at Marmot Basin Ski Resort so you can learn the fundamental techniques of ski touring or split boarding alongside the Avalanche Canada curriculum.
On-line Classroom
Complete the classroom portion before your field day through a series of readings, exercises, and quizzes. Meet your instructor and group in a video call prior to the field day to review material, ask questions, and complete a trip planning exercise (2 hours). You’ll need a Google account to access the online classroom.
*Access to the online classroom material will open December 1st and remain available to you all winter.
Field day
Sign up for your AST 1 course by selecting your field day in the calendar. The price of this course is $275 and includes access to our On-line Classroom material. The field day will provide opportunities to practice many of the skills highlighted in the classroom portion, along with some fun backcountry skiing or snowboarding.
Companion Rescue Skills
Hone your rescue skills. This course is a must-have for all winter backcountry recreationists.
The Companion Rescue Skills course is an important refresher for those with previous training and a great way to improve the rescue skills you learned in your AST 1. This hands-on, one-day course takes place in the field.
What you will learn:
- How to respond safely and efficiently to an avalanche incident.
- How to hone your transceiver skills
- How to use your probe effectively
- How to shovel. Learn to organize your group with the most efficient shoveling techniques.
- Learn the best methods for finding a victim buried without a transceiver
- How to practice these skills
Managing Avalanche Terrain
Find your way! This course is for those who have taken AST 1 and are looking to improve their terrain assessment skills. If this sounds like you, Managing Avalanche Terrain (MAT) will be a valuable addition to your training. MAT is a very focused field-based course designed to expand on the terrain management taught in AST 1. This course will help you develop more advanced winter backcountry travel skills and mitigate your risk by honing your terrain evaluation and travel skills.
What you will learn:
- Skills to help you plan, prepare for, and execute a safe backcountry trip
- Techniques to minimize risk when traveling in the backcountry
- How to recognize and classify avalanche terrain
Release Waiver Form
All guests participating in any activity with Rockaboo Mountain Adventures will be required to read and sign a digital or paper copy the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Release Waiver form. Your ACMG Certified Guide will review this waiver with all participants before each trip.
